Choosing the right seed treatment in current market conditions
is crucial in giving early protection to the crop. Seed is precision
treated at Daltons seed plant using specialist equipment, with
a wide range of seed treatments, to meet the growers requirements.

Oilseeds Seed Treatments
Suitable for Linseed only
The following
notes give a brief outline of the treatments available, for further
information please contact the seed office.
Single
Purpose Treatments
Wheat
Redigo
- This gives the best control to all major seed borne diseases,
along with soil borne bunt. Redigo gives very good control
of fusarium.
Beret Gold - Gives a similar level of control
as Redigo on seed borne diseases, except soil borne bunt.
Barley
Raxil
- Provides a high level of protection against all the
major seed borne barley diseases, including leaf stripe and
loose smut.
Also available:
Ravine
Broad
Spectrum Seed Treatments
Baytan
- can be applied to all cereal seed, providing good control
against foliar diseases such as yellow rust, as well as offering
a high level of protection from seed and soil borne diseases.
Baytan increases crop vigour, making plants more winter hardy
and able to grow quicker in the spring. It can also reduce levels
of take-all.
Take-All
Protection
Jockey
- Jockey was the first product available in the UK to provide
protection against Take-All. Jockey came as a major breakthrough
in the control of take-all. Traditional methods of control such
as crop rotation, delaying drilling and increased fertiliser
application, has meant that growers have had to reduce the acreage
of second wheat grown or accept lower yields.
One of
the active ingredients in Jockey is fluquinconazole. This reduces
disease symptoms such as root infections and white heads by
preventing fungus from spreading through the root surface. Fluquinconazole
also helps to reinforce the root structure providing further
protection against disease. Jockey provides a high level of
protection against seed and soil borne diseases, including foliar
diseases. This allows greater flexibility when applying T1 sprays.
Seed
treated with Jockey gives the grower the opportunity to maximise
second wheat yields and incorporate more wheat into the rotation.
Today Jockey is considered to be inferior to Latitude as far
as Take-all goes but Jockey is finding a new position in the
market as a good treatment for a medium Take-all risk but also
with very comprehensive control of septoria and other foliar
diseases. It has been called a Super Baytan.
Latitude
-Latitude is the Take - all treatment available from Monsanto, a fungicide that protects each seedling from take - all infection. Latitude (Silthiofam) seed treatment can recover up to two-thirds of lost yield on average, but response is dependant on variety choice. For best results Latitude should be combined with a consistent second wheat such as Consort or Deben, plus cultural controls. While early October drilling is optimum, response is consistent across drilling dates.
Unlike
Jockey, which is a stand alone product, Latitude only controls
take-all and needs to be co-applied with a product like Redigo
or Baytan.
Wheat Bulb
Fly Control
Evict
- Evict controls wheat bulb fly and wireworm, on wheat, barley
and oats.
The plant is protected during establishment by the slow release
of the active ingredient, tefluthrin. This provides a protective
zone around the plants root system. Evict is not dependent on
moisture for activity as it is nearly insoluble. NOTE: Evict
contains tefluthrin, a member of the pyrethroid group of chemicals.
Exposure to this can cause short term numbness of the skin.
It is therefore advised that protective clothing is worn when
handling Evict treated seed.
BYDV
Control
Sibutol
Secur / Raxil Secur / Baytan Secur:
Secur provides
protection against BYDV through the most susceptible period,
after drilling and through to December. The treatment can be
applied to wheat or barley, with either Sibutol or Raxil respectively.
It can also be applied as Baytan Secur to include broad purpose
disease control.
A major advantage with using Secur is the opportunity to drill
early. It also helps with protection against pests such
as slugs and wireworms.
Protection
against BYDV in the seed treatment eliminates the risk of missing
foliar aphicide sprays. It is also important to treat against
BYDV before it occurs as no spray treatment is effective against
infections that have already occurred.
Seed
Rates for Secur treated seed, drilling dates:
Late September
or onwards: A minimum seed rate of 125 Kg/ha will provide a
similar protection to two aphicide sprays.
Mid September:
High risk of BYDV at this time. A minimum seed rate of 100 kg/ha
is advised along with a well timed aphicide spray.
Late August
/ Early September: Secur used before the end of the first week
of September and / or a seed rate of less than 100 kg/ha may
reduce BYDV control, but should provide a good base for a programme
of 1-3 sprays.
Manganese Supplement
A Manganese
supplement can be applied with the seed treatment for instances
where there is Manganese deficiency in the field. It can also
help with crop establishment.
Pea and Bean Seed Treatments
Thiram/Thiraflo
- Both being 100% thiram are used for the control of damping off fungi. Thiram
is a standard treatment on both peas and is available for beans
where there is a history of disease.
HYTL
- Used for the control of seed borne
Ascochyta anthracnose and chocolate spot. Suitable for peas
lupins and
beans.
Wakil - Wakil is principally aimed at the control of Downy
mildew pythium spp and Ascochyta spp in combining and vining
peas.
Manganese
When applied
to pea seed manganese can protect against Marsh Spot. Manganese
deficiency can be a particular problem in soils that have a high
PH value, or are chalkly, sandy or organic. Soils with low potash
content, or seedbeds that are loose can induce deficiency.
Manganese
can be applied to peas to give the following benefits:
- Improved
plant establishment
- Provides
a source of manganese from germination
- Helps to
control marsh spot
- Reduced
risk of rejection for the human consumption market
- Improved
winter survival
- Increases
plant strength
- Significantly
improve yield
Oilseed Seed Treatments
Thiram
- Thyram is used for the control of
damping off fungi in oilseed rape. This treatment also reduces
seed borne Alternaria and Phoma Lingam.
Rovral
- Is used for the control of Alternaria in oilseed Rape. Alternaria
is spread through infection in the stubble. This causes damping
off in the autumn, which reduces plant establishment leading
to re-establishment costs or loss of crop. Rovral is suitable
for both Oilseed Rape and Linseed.
Mesurol
- Seed treatment from France gives control of cabbage stem flea
beetle in oilseed rape. This treatment is only available on
French produced seed, as UK application is not allowed.
Chinook
- Becoming the standard seed
treatment for all rapeseed south of the Humber. Chinook when
applied with Thyram or Rovral and Thyram is a comprehensive
insecticide and fungicide treatment for
oilseed rape and linseed.
Prelude
- This is a Fungicide seed treatment for Linseed giving good
control of Alteraria, botrytis and fusarium species.
